Shirley's sweetener
From Shirley Doltis Sir: The description of Shirley Porter as an 'arch-crook' (The Spectator's notes, 26 July) was grotesque. Without going into the details of the Westminster case, it remains a fact that she was unequivocally cleared of making any personal gain from the sale of council houses in the City. Her main offence seems to have been that she hoped that would-be buyers might vote for her; a desire shared by politicians of every persuasion when they launch popular policies.
