Defining 'Catholic'
Sir: Patrick Marnham in his article 'Fal' ling in love with love' (11 February) uses the term 'Catholic' as synonomous with 'Roman Catholic', a thing which no loyal Anglican would accept. Again, the Church of England in her Prayer Book, and Catechism accepts the 'real presence of Christ in Holy Communion whilst rejecting transubstantiation (Article 28). Finally, the Church of England accepts the first four Ecumenical Councils, af which Ephesus gave the title 'Theotokos = God-bearer' to Christ's mother. R. G. Wilkes
