The Week in Parliament
Our Parliamentary Correspondent writes : The big events move so quickly that Parliament can scarcely comprehend them. Hess, Vichy, Crete, ' Bismarck,' Roosevelt : each deserves care- ful and considered treatment, but meanwhile Parliament is quite rightly considering other things, production, finance, food, coal, the case of Lady Lucas, the Landlord and Tenant Bill, propa- ganda and Civil Defence. The Prime Minister makes daily statements on Crete ; the Secretary of State for Air clears the mists of suspicion away from Squadron-Leader the Duke of Hamilton, whom the House remembers as the gallant and modest member for Renfrewshire ; Mr. Eden makes a strong and welcome statement on Vichy ; then later news of naval losses is somewhat compensated for by the sinking of the ' Bismarck.'
