The rate for the job?

Sir : With reference to the caricature by Richard Wilson on the front cover of— judging by the crown—our Queen. This dreadful caricature appals and angers me very much. I expect, and hope, that many others feel the same.

Our Queen has dignity and sympathy amongst her qualities. The face depicted is cunning and—I would say—evil. Cover the hair of the caricature with your hand and the evil in the face is more clearly seen. It is not funny!

It so happens that the television pro- gramme, Royal Family, was watched and heard by me this very afternoon. I had been watching her true face and her manner. To insult our Queen and her loyal subjects with this abominable caricature is disgusting— nothing less. You, sir, should print an apology on the front page of the next issue. Will you do this?

Richard Willson could do with a' day in the stocks, to cool down. But Her Majesty would not agree with me. for she is, I am sure, a forgiving person. I thought I was, but do not feel that way today.

A. Simpson Aruwimi, II New Barnes Avenue, St Albans, Herts Sir: Your suggestion (15 November) that the Prime Minister has exploited the Crown over Rhodesia is most unfair. Mr Wilson has simply sought to maintain the constitution in the face of unreasonable Conservative criticism. Sir Humphrey Gibbs was awarded Royal Victorian Order decorations on the Queen's own initiative.

The Tories have exploited the name of the Crown for fifty years in Northern Ireland.
