In a short but admirable speech, constituting a reply on behalf of the staff to a resolution of thanks, Mr. Hugh Lewis, the General Manager—to whom the Chairman had paid a high and well-deserved tribute—paid his own tribute to the great services of the staff. -Mk. Lewis said-that he did not think

• of the Liverpool and .Londoh and Globe could render greater service than to see that, talent was discovered and the fullest use made of it. His desire was always to- shorten, as far as possible, the early period of the routine work, which, if prolonged, tended to dull the imagination.
