THE LITHOGRAPHIC PROCESS.
A compendious but detailed and intelligible treatise on the lithographic process has been issued in a well-looking volume,* from the printing es- tablishment of Messrs. Waterlow and Sons. It includes the art of litho- graphy and the business of lithography ; and goes from neat commercial running hand to the representation of nature. As the title indicates, the book has special reference to a matter wherein the publishers own a par- ticular interest—their own patent autographic press. This now familiarly known apparatus was invented for the purpose of enabling individuals to take with a minimum of trouble copies for themselves of any written documents of their own. Gradually it has come into more extensive ap- plication; and the proprietors now show how far it may be used for the production of regular works of art, in lieu of the ordinary lithographic press. Greater simplicity and some other advantages are claimed in its behalf ; and some of the illustrative plates appended to the essay prove that it is beyond question capable of producing lithographed designs which may compete with any such as are not considerably above the
English average of merit in the art.
