SPEAEING - TRIIMPETS FOR RAILWAYS.

Chichester, 1 Mo. 18, 1858.

RESPECTED FRIEND—The attention of railway companies being again di- rected to the subject of some means of communication between the guard and engine-driver on railways, I beg to invite the notice of railway di- rectors to the outline of a plan of mine, given in the Spectator of September 20, 1845, No. 899; having seen nothing since to supersede this invention for economy, certainty, and simplicity. For the information of those who may not have the means of referring to the details published in the Spectator alluded to, I may briefly state that the invention consists in the application of the principle of the ordinary speaking-trumpet to railway carriages, with connecting branches and mouth- pieces for the use of the passengers, guard, and engine-driver. The only deviation from the original plan I would now suggest is, the substitution of

gutta percha for the metallic tubes then recommended. - .
