Midas is a deeper study. Mr. Bretherton has lived long

in the United States and " packs a punch in every paragraph," without flippancy, however. One could hardly ask for more " meat " in the author's 97 pages, but we should like to know why he says that lending money to Europe " will do America no good " ? He himself says on the next page, in his snappy, sanguinary way, that it will relieve her " of the blood with which she is bloated. Europe will likewise be relieved to feel the life-giving stream coursing again through her emaciated financial veins." This is true, indeed, if not prettily put. There seems to us to be scope for short, informative books of this kind. * * * *
