On Tuesday also Captain Bathurst was interrogated by Mr. Richardson

as to whether there were at present in the London West India Docks some ten thousand tons of Manila sugar hought by London dealers, which they were not allowed to clear except they undertook that it should be used for brewing purposes. The Food Controller, said Captain Bathurst, was not prepared, as at present advised, to grant exemptions from this Order in other than exceptional circumstances. We should add that Captain Bathurst stated that the brewers' sugar was of a grade generally nneuitable for domestic consumption. By reserving it for the use of brewers, the Sugar Commission were enabled to suspend the issue of licences for the importation of brewers' sugar, and so save a considerable amount of tonnage.
