At Dover, on Monday, a few minutes before high-water, a numlier of persons were very much surprised at the sudden rising of the tide at least two feet in the space of about five minutes, and then immediately afterwards it-ebbed, rushing, boiling, and foaming through the bridge' way, with greater velocity, if possible, than when the sluices are rita- ning, and for some little thou suspending the operations of shutting the gates, which the harbour workmen were about effecting. Several old mariners who witnessed it, observed that there hail been an earth' quake, or some strong convulsion of nature somewhere. —Kealish Times.
Mr. Henry Ward, merchant, of Oxford, has recently built at his own expense a complete floating chapel at that place, capable of containing from 120 to 140 persons, for the benefit of the watermen and their families, with a residence at one end for no schoolmaster and mietress. A chaplain has been appointed, and the heads of the Colleges end other friends have subscribed to his stipend. The chapel cost ?tr. Ward 1,000/. in building, and he has also invested WO/. for its repairs. —Bermes Worcester Journal.
