Vulgar fraction

Sir: In a rather pathetic letter (27 Novem- ber) David Kemp, the Canterbury Dioce- san Secretary, asks for understanding and encouragement towards church bureaucrats.

I trust that the perceptive Damian Thompson will continue to ignore such spe- cial pleading for sympathy towards church administrators, who are systematically dis- mantling the Church of England.

As Mr Thompson correctly observes, it is now only a few independently-minded cler- gy, holding the parson's freehold, who are able to defend the parishes of England. It is no wonder that church administrators want to abolish the ancient parochial freeholds and thus effectively silence dissent.

If ever there was a sacred cow to be slaughtered, it is the modern church's trust in 'modern management techniques'. To identify such management techniques with the Gospel is simply vulgar, but sadly is symptomatic of the thinking of the Church of England's lay-executive, who inspire lit- tle trust.
