It seems to be generally understood that Sir Henry Brand

wishes to retire from the Speakership as soon as a satisfactory substitute can be found, and if rumour can be trusted there is some difficulty in inducing men of the first rank to accept the appointment. This is not to be wondered at, but much to be regretted. There is hardly any post in which a man qualified by genius to strike out a new line could render such great services to his country. On the few occasions on which Mr. Courtney has taken the place of Chairman of Committees, he has discharged his duties with a firmness, a tact, and an impartiality which won the admiration of the Irish party and the Opposition, as much as of the Ministerialiats. Is not he the man for the post?
