It was clearly shown during the debate that Government could
not proceed by indictment. No trial could have been held until November, and Mr. O'Sullivan would therefore retain his office almost or quite up to the close of his term, while his partizans 'would have grown more violent every day. Already Alderman Lyons has been threatened with death for refusing to sit on the same bench with the Mayor, and public meetings have been held in support of the latter's conduct. The matter concerned the Public peace, and the Government was reduced by the state of the ha to ask the assistance of Parliament.
