China : a Brief Account of the Country, its Inhabitants
and their institu- tions. By Samuel Mossman. (Society for Promoting Christian Know- ledge.)—For "a brief account" of such a country as China this little book is worthy of recommendation. Mr. Mossman has lived many years in China, and has "made it his study to understand the extraordinary people who inhabit it, their history, and institutions." There is no lack of extraordinary features in his description, and though necessarily much condensed it takes in nearly all that is remarkable. Still it would have been well if the arrangement of the book had been more systematic, and the narrative a little lighter.
