Unconstitutional

Sir: Whilst enjoying Alexandra Artley's article and her regard for Queen Anne's Gate (Diary, 10 October), may I set the record right in one respect?

St Stephen's Club which occupies No. 34 was never the former Constitutional Club. St Stephen's was founded in 1870 under the patronage of Disraeli and occupied pre- mises at 1 Bridge Street.

These large premises were sold to the Government and 34 Queen Anne's Gate purchased in 1960 from the Tennant fami- ly. The new club was opened in 1962 by Harold Macmillan who stayed in the house as a boy.

In 1979 an amalgamation took place with the Constitutional Club to form the present Club.
