The American Senate on Saturday last adopted by 49 votes
to 23 Senator Knox's resolution declaring that the state of war between the United States and Germany had come to an end, Senator Lodge predicted that a separate treaty with Germany would probably follow the resolution. He declared that the Treaty of Versailles could not easily be amended by the excision of the Covenant. Mr. Wilson, indeed, did his best to root the League of Nations in every part of the Treaty, so as to prevent any attempt on the part of the Senate to accept the peace and reject the League. Senator Lodge said that, when all the necessary amendments had been made, only the shell of the Treaty would remain. It must be remembered, however, that President Harding, like his predecessor, has asserted America's rights as a. belligerent in regard to the
cable station at Yap, and that he has expressed a desire to ratify an amended Treaty of Versailles.
