STYBARROW CRAG, ULLSWATER.

[To the Editor of the SrEciwroa.] SIR,—I note, in your issue of last week, a letter from a correspondent re Stybarrow Crag, suggesting that the nation should acquire it, in order to preserve it. I should like to point out to your correspondent that I, as owner of the property, offered it two years ago to the National Trust at a considerable rate below its value, but they could not see their way to purchasing it.

I quite agree with your correspondent that it is one of the most beautiful parts of Ullswater, but, owing to the heavy burden of income tax and rates, one is compelled to, consider ways and means.—I am, Sir, &c.,

Greystoke Castle, Cumberland. MABEL HOWARD.
