How to fund Oxford

Sir: It is not the case, as Simon Jenkins asserts (‘Independence for Oxford’, 29 October), that the vice-chancellor, John Hood, believes in principle that the university should go ‘independent’. His clear view is that Oxford will be best served and serve best, if increased funding comes from a range of sources, including the government.
Nor is it the case that the university corporate plan (which Mr Jenkins fails to mention has been fully approved) calls for ‘fewer subsidised home undergraduates’. Rather, it proposes a reduction in the overall growth of the student body.
As a great national institution, Oxford certainly needs strong commitment and passionate interest. It also needs shrewd judgment and level heads.
