Sir: I have been reading your magazine now for ten
years, particularly the column of Mr Paul Johnson because I find it stimulating and unpredictable. I have also purchased two of his books and taken the opportunity to follow his train of thought. In the Sixties he was of the left and sup- ported Mr Wilson's Labour party. During the Seventies and Eighties he supported Mrs Thatcher's Conservative party. Now he is following, simultaneously, Mr Blair and Sir James Goldsmith.
Is it in fact the case that he is prepared to give his allegiance to whichever party appears to be in the ascendancy? Those of us who take an interest in association foot- ball have a phrase for someone like this. We would call him a glory-hunter.
