Correction John Bowen's opening sentence (Books of the Year, 21
November) should have read: I much admired The Children of Men by P. D. James (Faber, £14.99) for its command of narrative, for the exactness of its observation of people and places, and for the power and courage with which she has been able to confront and use the deepest terrors of the old.
We apologise to Mr Bowen for omitting the penultimate word.
