THE SPECTATOR'S CIRCULATION
IN JANUARY to June of this year, The Spectator sold an average of 40,398 copies per week. This is the highest circulation of the magazine since 1962, and represents a doubling of circulation since 1984. We ought at once to admit, however, that about 2,000 of this figure comes from those who took up a three-month offer in the Daily Telegraph, and so our more perma- nent circulation is between 38,000 and 39,000. Even so, this is highest figure since 1964. The Spectator has only once in its history sold more than 50,000 copies. This was in 1946, under rather artificial cir- cumstances, when the magazine benefited from a very large bulk order from the forces. The highest sale in normal condi- tions was in 1961, under the editorship of Brian Inglis, when the circulation was 48,016. We should like to thank all read- ers, new and old, who collectively compose our excellent new figure.
