PRONUNCIATION OF GREEK

[To the Editor of the SPECTATOR.] Sin,—It may be fully admitted that no one thus far can do more than guess how ancient Greek was pronounced. Would it not be practicable to adopt that of Athens, and of the modem Greek which is simple, consistent and takes account of the accents ? As to its being absurd or barbarous, savages, simpletons and sometimes even Oxford examiners laugh at and consider barbarous what they are not accustomed to or do not understand !—I am, Sir, &c., ROBT. P. ASHE. 05 Birdhurst Rise, Croydon.
