A philanthropist, who wishes his name concealed, has placed £200,000
in the hands of the King to be used for the prevention and alleviation of pulmonary disease. His Majesty has accordingly ordered that it shall be used for the foundation and maintenance of a hospital of a hundred beds, where patients afflicted with tuberculosis may be treated according to the newest and best lights of science. That is a large gift well applied, and we hope that it will he the precursor of many more. English millionaires do not behave well in this respect,—far worse, for instance, than their American rivals, who have this year spent £25,000,000 on the endowment of universities, colleges, libraries, and art schools. It is thoroughly discreditable to us that Oxford and Cam. bridge should lack the million apiece now required for their complete equipment.
