The researches of the Food Council have revealed 'that the
quartern loaf of bread could be bought last week at prices varying from 71d. to the 10d. fixed by the Bakers' Association. This was the ruling price until the Associa- tion somewhat hastily reduced it last week to 91d. on the score of a reduction in the price of flour. Last Saturday the Food Council's letter on the subject to the President of the Board of Trade was published. It stated that a reduction from 10d. was long overdue, and that Id. was too small a reduction. The Council, it will be remembered, has no statutory powers, but. it seems to be fulfilling the role we expected of it, namely, to give publicity . to an authoritative opinion which Will prevail as forcibly as any Statute. The Council's attention is now to be turned to the question of short Measure in deliveries.
