A splendid piece of plate, valued at 1,000/., was presented
to Sir Thomas Phillips, at a public meeting in Newport on Thursday week, in acknowledgment of his conduct during the Chartist riots in Novem- ber last. The Radicals of Leicester have obtained permission of' the Magistrates to allow a deputation of their body to visit Vincent, Edwards, and eherrard, the Chartists in Oakham Gaol, and to present them with a flitch of bacon. These prisoners have five months longer to remain in prison.—Lincoln Chronicle.
A numerous meeting of the parishioners of Barking, Essex, took place in the vestry of that church on the 17111 September, for the pur- pose of making a church-rate. Mr. Holmes stated that the expenses for the repairs of the church, Sec. would be 217/. I Is. 10d.; and moved that a rate of 6d. in the pound be granted to defray the same. Mr. Courtauld, after stating the judgment of the Court of Queen's Bench in the Braintree church -rate case, moved, 'that no church-rate be granted." After a poll of twd days, the numbers were—for the rate, 172; against it, 201 ; majority against the rate, 29.
The annual meeting of the friends and supporters of the East Surry Agricultural Association took place on Tuesday, at the Greyhound Inn, Croydon. There was a ploughing-match in the forenoon, and a dinner afterwards.
A meeting of the shareholders of the Severn Navigation Company was held at Worcester, last week, to consider the proposition to raise funds to make another application to Parliament for the improvement of the river. The business was opened by a statement to the effect that 1,026 shareholders had assented to pay an additional ten per cent. per share; 100 had dissented, and the remainder had not sent any answer. The Chairman said, that, considering the small number of shareholders who had agreed to pay the additional call, it was useless, in Ids opinion, for the Company to continue its existence. A resolution declaratory of the dissolution of the Company, was carried nem. con.
A special general meeting of the shareholders in the Bristol and Exe- ter Railway Company was held on Wednesday, at Bristol, for the pur- pose of finally determining for or against the project for leasing the line to the Great .Western Railway Company for a term of five years, to be computed from the time of its final completion to Exeter. There was a very large attendance of proprietors front Exeter, Taunton, Bridge- water, 2iianchester, Zee. ..rne chair was takee by Mr. Ricketts, the Chairman of' the Board of Directors. Mr. Divett, M.P. for Exeter, moved the adoption of the lease; which, be contended, was not only
for the wellbeing of the undertaking, but absolutely essential to the speedy completion of the works. Mr. Tyrrell of Exeter strorgly op- posed the granting of the lease ; which, he said, would only be beneficial to the Great Western Company. After an animated discnssioa, tile motion was put to the meeting, and a show of hands was taken. The Chairman said he was unable to decide upon the division. A poll was then commenced, and concluded on the following day ; when the reso- lution for granting the lease was carried, by a majority exceeding three- fifths.
