One of the minor mysteries of the war is the

German submarine discovered derelict on the Goodwin Sands last week with sixty dead inside her. How did she get there? How did the men die? The Admiralty no doubt has its theory, but it has not published it, and apparently does not mean to. It may, of course, be something much more definite than a theory. One possibility is that the men died by a pure accident, as in the case of the ' Thetis.' But it is equally possible, and more likely, that a depth charge had done its deadly work, leaving the submarine sufficiently intact to drift to where she was found, but disabling her from rising to renew her air-supply.
