A CRY FROM THE FAR WEST

[To the Editor of the SPECTATOR.] Srn,—I have replied with pleasure to the letter of Mr. F. W. Philpot, Blue Ridge P.O., Alberta, Canada, asking for some English newspapers. But Mr. Philpot failed to state a very" relevant fact in these hard times—namely, that newspapers• and magazines may be sent to Canada and Newfoundland. at the following low rates : 6 ozs., ld. ; 11 lbs., I id. ; 2 lbs. 2d. ; and so on, Id. for each half-pound up to 5 lbs. for 5d. They should be marked " Registered Papers." Sending two or more weekly, I know that a 3-1b. parcel of papers sent to Canada for 3d. is one of the cheapest kindnesses one can perform to-day. These papers are passed on from home to -home until worn out. Every week nearly I meet people who are paying Id. for every 2 ozs. owing to this " magazine " rate not being widely advertised.
