"PEACE WITH HONOUR."

(TO THE EDITOR OF THE "SPECTATOR."] STR,—It may interest students of history to know that the phrase "Peace with honour" has its parallel passage in the last speech of Lord Chatham in the House of Lords. Speaking on the subject of the American war, the Earl said :—" In God's name, if it is absolutely necessary to declare either for peace or war, and the former cannot be preserved with honour, why is not the latter commenced without hesitation ?"—I am, Sir, &c.,
