A New Kngtand Maid. By Eliza F. Pollard. (Blackie and

Son. 3s. 6d.)—This is "a Tale of the American Rebellion." Its chief interest turns on the fortunes of Benedict Arnold, who is the brother of the "New England maid." That was no enviable position in those days; probably at one time the name of Arnold was as hateful a sound as could be imagined to an American. All this is well described by Miss Pollard. If she does not quite solve the curious problem of the man's personality, we can only say that the impossible is not to be looked for. She seems to think, and many will agree with her, that Major Andre suffered more for the sins of others than for his own.
