A place in heaven

Sir: I am very sorry that Monsignor Gilbey has misread or misunderstood my inter- view with him (Letters, 20 July). He did have an opportunity of reading it and correcting it before publication, and did not raise the point he mentions now. In fact, the idea of a virtuous Hindu being excluded from heaven was part of my questioning. The Monsignor made it clear in the interview, as he does now, that in his opinion such an excellent candidate would not be excluded.
