There are, of course, two sides to all this. It
means that journalism must plainly be counted among the dan- gerous trades—but every journalist knew that already. It is extraordinarily difficult to summarize fairly in a few inches a legal or other hearing that probably lasted hours. Generally speaking, justice was no doubt done.in the cases in question. But juries on the whole tend to sympathize with libel plaintiffs, on the ground that papers are. wealthy institutions which can well afford to pay ; so far as, that idea does actuate them it is disastrous to justice.
