MAGNIFICENCE.
[To THE EDITOR OF THE " SFECTA.TOR."] SIR,—In your article on "Magnificence," in the Spectator of November 9th, you say that millionaires of to-day have done nothing towards landscape-making. It is well known in the United States that Mr. George Vanderbilt has been for years constructing a palace in the mountains near Asheville, North Carolina, which is said to be one of the most beautiful places in the world ; and that around this palace he has bought, I think, 11,000 acres of mountain and forest, and is carrying splendid drives all through them. He is the bachelor uncle of the bride of last week ; and is said to be a quiet studious man, and devoted to his mother.—I am, Sir, &e., R. K. CANTLEY.
