LL.D. (Longman and Co.)—This pamphlet is an expansion of the author's article on the same subject in Kitto's "Cyclopedia of Biblical Literature." Founding his views on the works of Frankel and Jost, he gives a complete account of the sect, as well as the ancient authorities on the subject in artenso, together with an outline of the modern litera- ture of the subject. Avoiding the extreme view which makes Chris- tianity a mere expansion of Essene doctrine, he does not shrink from pointing out the resemblances between the two.
