The other public man called on Mr. Shaw himself. Mr.
Shaw opened the conversation by remarking that he farmed 2,000 acres of his own land and was running a horse for the Derby. Having thus created a suitably impressive atmosphere, he went on to say that his visitor's name had been mentioned for a baronetcy, and that he, Mr. Shaw, could " get it done in an hour." He explained that when Mr. Lloyd George went to the country he would want funds for contesting seats. Hence the need for money. The gentleman, in describing this inter- view to the Duke of Northumberland, said that Mr. Shaw did not get so far as to mention any sum because " I quickly told him what I thought about it." The Duke says that both gentlemen who were thus approached are willing to come forward and substantiate their charges in the event of Mr. Shaw denying them.
