A point that interests us greatly in the portion which

we publish this week of the ex-German Emperor's Autobiography is the assertion that Scotsmen have more humour than the English. This—need we say ?- is entirely contrary to the English belief. And yet we dare say the Kaiser is right. Scottish humour is plainly different from English humour, but we must confess often to have been entranced by its pawkiness. It has a • reserve, a caution, a restraint, a slyness, a subtlety, which put it in a peculiar class. It is appreciated by those who understand it, and cannot be explained to those who do not, simply •because it why waste words ?—because it is pawky.
