At the anniversary meeting of the Geographical Society when the medal was presented to Sir Leopold M`Clintock, it was proposed by Sir Roderick Murchison, that the Society should promote the erection of a monument in bronze to the memory of Franklin and his companions, as the discoverers of the North-west passage. Sir Roderick suggested that as Franklin had served under Nelson, Trafalgar Square would be the most eligible and suitable site for the monument.
