Leave our Hearts alone

From Christine Smith Sir: Dear, oh dear, you boys do get your knickers in a twist on our behalf! It is very sweet of you to think that we are too stupid or perhaps 'naive' (Michael Lawden, Letters, 19 July) to understand the principles behind the Hearts investment scheme. We are all well aware that most, if not all, investments are not a licence to print money — how does Floyd Kermode (Letters. 26 July) imagine casinos make a profit; is it not simply because some people who invest in their activities lose money? But, as with casinos, the stock market or the lottery, we all know that we take a risk, and yes, boys, we may lose our money (remember Lloyd's?). But hey, we're grown-up enough to know that, to understand the risk when we invest — and we certainly do not carp on about it or moralise about it to others. Leave it alone: it's fun, it does work, and what's the problem? Nobody forces us to join.
