Belt up
Sir: Some years ago an acquaintance retailed to me an incident that occurred while he was driving home from a dinner party. As I recall, he fell asleep and the car hit a tree. Because he was asleep he fell sideways at the moment of impact and thus avoided being impaled upon the steering column.
Since hearing this story I have studiously avoided using the safety belts which have been fitted to each of the cars which I have driven in the past years.
May I now thank Leslie Adrian for so clearly explaining, in his article of 26 July, why indeed I should belt up; I shall unhesitatingly do so in the future.
