New term

Sir: Auberon Waugh's article on Bosnia (Another voice, 22 July) displays an atti- tude so original as to deserve the coining of

a new term — the verb to anti-pilger. To anti-pilger is to strike postures quite as fatu- ous, self-satisfied and unpleasant as its con- verse. Instead of banging on sententiously about distant horrors, to anti-pilger is to exploit those same horrors to show a smirk- ing disdain for atrocities committed on any- one beyond one's immediate class or tribe.

While perhaps we will end up having done virtually nothing about the genocide in Bosnia, we don't have to be so pleased with ourselves about it.
