Sir: Mark Steyn is wrong when he says that Ty Cobb still owns the American baseball record for most stolen bases (Arts, 8 July). Lou Brock first broke Cobb's record in the 1970s, ending up with 938 stolen bases. But Brock has been surpassed by Rickey Hen- derson, who began the 1995 season with 1,117 stolen bases and is still active. The only American major league baseball record held by Ty Cobb is for the most runs scored, with 2,245.
