Another windfall has dropped to the Government by theleathof Sir
Thomas Hardy, (the officer in whose arms our immortal Nelio breathed his last,) who held the Governorship of Greenwich Hospital; and the question of who will succeed him is exciting at this moment considerable interest in naval circles. There are understood to be three candidates for the situation ; Sir Robert Stopford, Sir Robert Otway, and Sir Graham Moore. Of these officers, the politics of Sir Robert Otway will give him a decided preference over his competitors; but he is in that position of delicate embarrassment in which a certain quadru. ped, whose name must not be mentioned to ears polite, found himself when standing between two bundles of hay of equal dimensions. Tee time has been when an Admiral was not allowed to be ubiquitous; but such regulations were only ietended to refer to Tories. We have accordingly Sir Robert Otway in close attendance on her Majesty, and in ec»meand at Sheerness, at the sante time. For this reason, Sir Ro- bert can hardly make up his mind whether he will take Greenwich or not. There can he no doubt of the validity of the claims of Sir Robert Stopford to the appointment ; but his retirement from the Mediterre. nean fleet at this moment might lead to most important consequences; as, besides being an officer of distinguished service, he is a man who tempers gollantry with a quality which has been sarcastically called its better holt', " discretion ; " but which must be in great request in his present difficult position. Meanwhile, the contest is likely to end pretty much after the manner of the dispute about a piece of cheese evhich was referred by certain cats to the decision of a monkey, who settled the matter by gobbling up the precious morceatt himself: Sir Charles Aden' is beginning to be of opinion that Lord Melbourne's Government cannot long bold together; and is therefore anxious, be.
the vessel strikes, to fasten upon the substantial thing in his reach that will keep him fairly afloat until something more important shall present itself. Whilst engaged in investigating the claims of the re- spective caedidates for Greenwich Hospital, it is said to have occurred to bini, that the best mode of adjusting the difference will be to take it hire:elle This decision has, w is are assured, met with the earnest approbation of—all the Elliots.—Stunderd.
The anlooked-for death of Mr. Jttstice Vaughan is another windfall. This event took place near Watford, on Wednesday night. Judge Vaughan sat at the Old Bailey last week, and was pretty well on Wed. nesday afternoon. The immediate caose of his sudden death is thought to have beee an affection of the heart.
Lietttena It-General Sir Thomas M`Malion, K.C.B., who was relieved frum the command of the South-western district of Great Britein a few months heck, in consequence of his promotiun in the laet Brevet, is to be appointed to the command at Bombay ; Lieutenant-General Sir Ale:bib:11d Campbell having declined to aecept the appointment.— Standard.

to return to that country as Military Secretary to the Governor-General of North America. Ile is to set sail in the Liverpool steam-vessel for New York this day.
