Postcodes

Sir: I was, to put it mildly, surprised to read Geoffrey Wheatcroft's meandering collection of gratuitous insults. In 'PO blues' in your issue of 14 October Mr Wheatcroft gets some of his facts more or less right and then draws them his own way to unconstructive conclusions. Td take, for one example, he mentions the fairly restricted capabilities of the United States postcode system and castigates us because we are more sophisticated. It looks as though we can never win! If Mr Wheatcroft had asked us we could have told him that the Americans have realised the shortcomings of their system and are to add extra digits shortly to give themselves the facilities of the UK system. Similar changes are being considered in Norway, West Germany and Belgium. Peter H. Young
