M. Painleve resigned forthwith. The President on Monday invited M.
Briand to form a new Government. Within twenty-four hours he-reported that he was unable to do so. M. Doutriergue thereupon turned to M. Doumer. M. Domner, in turn, refused, and when we go to press M. Herkiot is making an attempt. In the meantime the franc has touched 130, and the Treasury is approaching the moraent when, if no further provision is made, there will be no money for carrying on the Government.
