MR. WALTER'S PANDEMONIAN FLAGEOLET.

A NEW musical instrument, called the Pandemonian (!) Flageolet, has been sent us for trial. Its diabolical name led us to expect some of those sounds which CoweEn imagines may be devised, in the place of Wo, to add to the torments of its inhabitants ; but, in place of discord- ant screams, it emits nothing but the softest notes .imaginable It con- sists of a series of small pipes, similar to those of the organ, put to- gether in the same way as the pandean pipes ; and it is played in a like manner,-only the player breathes (and he must do so gently) into holes at the side, instead of into the ends of the pipes. It contains two octaves, and is well adapted for playing sweet and simple airs. On the instrument we have seen, however, the scale is badly graduated, and the intonation false ; a fault that must be rectified by the ingenious in- ventor, who is also the manufacturer. The instrument varies in price from two shillings to one guinea.
