am delighted to learn that you intend to publish a

series of articles on Colonial aims. In the 1914-18 war I was engaged in instructing the American troops, who came over in large numbers to be incorporated in our formations, in the capabilities of our rifle, the Lee Enfield, par- ticularly in the matter of rapid fire. They had ;Jeen trained in the use of the Springfield, but had to discard it—for obvious reasons—and it was my job to demonstrate the superiority of the Lee Enfield. In many con- versations with both officers and men I found that they all were firmly convinced that the Colonies were taxed to keep up our Navy, and simply would not believe me when I told them they were wrong. It is to be hoped your articles will dispel that false impression, so widely held.—
