Manchester has- declined to co-operate with Liverpool in the construction
of a great new road between the two cities. As we so desperately need more roads, this seems a pity, for it would have opened up fresh com- mercial channels in North-East Lancashire and South- West Yorkshire. But we can take heart at a new and more extensive proposal now being considered by Mersey side members of Parliament and motor• transport pro- meters. Their idea is to construct a magnificent highway exclusively for motor traffic between London and Liverpool by way of Birmingham, Manchester and Oldham. The cost would= be approximately E15,000;080 and would be• paid for by mileage and tonnage tolls. We may- again see a turnpike and stop to pay our toll.
