APARTHEID AND THE PRESS
SIR, In your lait issue Mr. Hendrik Picnaar seeks to excuse the South African Government's persecu- tion of Randolph Vigne, the Liberal, journalist. The excuse that he gives is that South Africa is 'in mortal peril.'
This excuse contradicts the South African CioN,:t.it- ment's own story. To attract immigrants and in‘ est- ment, government spokesmen, such as the new ambassador in London. Dr. Carel de Wet, claim that South Africa is an oasis of calm and security in a disturbed world.
As the lives of immigrants and the savings of investors are at stake, I feel Mr. Picnaar ought to he doing what he can to dissuade the South African Government from continuing to spread so incorrect
a story. May through your columns, ask Mr. Picnaar to give us an assurance that he is in fact doing so?
