Restricted service

Sir: In his letter to you (13 February) Mr Evans of British Airways defends the record of his cabin crews. But Richard West (23 January) was criticising the total service provided by British Airways — not par- ticularly the cabin crews. Much of the fault may lie in the lack of strong and inspired management.

Certainly, recent experiences reinforce my impression that British Airways are doing nothing to lure passengers away frog rival airlines. On a December flight from Pisa, I asked for an English newspaper, but was told that these are now reserved for club-class passengers only. Furthermore, the announcements on the speaker system were made only in English, even though most of the passengers were Italian- Alitalia, of course, always make an- nouncements on this route in English as well as Italian.
