* * * On Sunday I went to evensong in
a London church which I had not visited for some years. To my sorrow I found that the congregation had sunk to a third of its former size. Before the War many used to be turned away. The service was the same ; the same attentive care had been given to the music ; the choir was as good. Two causes are no doubt primarily reiponsible. Golf draws away large numbers of the well-to-do that went to church formerly ; the cinemas opening at six o'clock also attract thousands. But churches like St. Martin-in- the-Fields show us what can be done.
