Big Business Like many another social club of the sort,

the Garrick takes seriously the convention that its premises should not be used for business pur- poses. In these days, of course, everyone does business everywhere, so there as elsewhere it no doubt becomes a question of not doing it too blatantly. I should imagine, though, that a few of the older sticklers must have bristled at Hugh Cudlipp's disclosure that on January 28 a con- fidential luncheon meeting was held in the club to discuss the Mirror's manoeuvres against the Odhams empire. Among those present were Hugh Gaitskell, John Beavan, the editor of the Herald, and Sir Christopher Chancellor, all three of whom are members. Which was the host? Who looked most sheepishly at the notice which, I'm told, soon went up on the board reminding members of the no-business rule?
